Sustainability is defined as working to help people and nature be successful by providing for today’s needs without compromising the needs of future generations.
It is a balance of environmental, social, and economic needs. For St. John Fisher College, it is leveraging the institution's academic mission, using the campus as a the living laboratory, and supporting impactful community engagement to improve our institution, create new knowledge and solutions, and provide students, faculty, and staff opportunities to help build a sustainable future for the College, our community, and our region.
Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.

Make our campus have lower environmental impact while achieving cost-saving and social goals.
Advance sustainable practices on campus by acting as an advocate, idea incubator, and coordinator to generate positive economic, social, and environmental outcomes in our built and natural environments.
Help faculty and students use the College as a living laboratory.

In support of our sustainability goals, the College is an institutional member of the (AASHE), the New York State Coalition for Sustainability in Higher Education (NYSCHE), and a . Further, the college participates in Rochester Area efforts with fellow institutions of higher education.
AASHE, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, is the international leader in sustainability for colleges and universities. As an institutional member of AASHE, all members of the Fisher community have access to AASHE's wide variety of resources, ranging from operations to academics to community engagement.
New York Coalition for Sustainability in Higher Education
New York Coalition for Sustainability in Higher Education, NYCSHE, is the state-wide organization dedicated to supporting sustainability efforts at both public and private institutions. As a member of NYCSHE, the College has access to all of the experiences and shared resources of the group.
REV Campus Challenge Member
The promotes clean energy efforts by recognizing and supporting colleges and universities in New York State that implement clean energy projects and principles on campus, in the classroom, and in surrounding communities. As a participating member, the College has committed to improving our energy efficiency and investigate further potential in clean energy.
